My name is Jayne Black and I have a learning disability. I have a son who has a learning disability called dyslexia. I have worked with a national organization, The Learning Disability Association, for seven years. I have led support groups, been a speaker at state conferences and have advised parents in regards to learning disabilities. I also have taught self advocacy skills to children. I am committed to changing the face of learning disabilities. That is why I have founded Mission ABC!
What picture do you have in your mind of what learning disabilities are? Is it a person with average to above average intellegence? Is it the face of a famous actor, or a successful busniness person, or even a Vice President of the United States? Well, it should be because these are the faces of of those with learning disabilities. Tom Cruise, Charles Schwab and Nelson Rockerfeller all had or have learning disabilities! There are many, many other famous and successful people that have learned to deal with their learning disabilities. I want children who have LD to know you can do anything, and if you are stuggling, there are people to help! Unfortunately, parents and children still have to know their rights regarding special education so that they can receive all of the help they need, all of the time!! Together, let's change the fact that thousands of children still feel like something is wrong with them because they have LD, when in fact it is the system that is used to "help" them that is typically at fault.
